Protecting Your Eyes

If your eyes will be at risk for injuries, it is essential to protect them at all times. It always pays to be well prepared for your work day. Part of your preparation is to choose the right kind of eye protection. Your eye protection will depend on your activity. Here are the different types of eye protection that you can use in your workplace:

  • Prescription and nonprescription safety glasses may appear to be typical accessories. But these glasses can provide your eyes with additional protection. These glasses have stronger frames and lenses than regular eyeglasses. It is ideal for wearing in the workplace. Be sure to get safety glasses that have the approval of the ANSI (American National Standards Institute).

  • Goggles can protect your eyes from chemical splashes, impact, and dust. These glasses are resistant to impact because they are made from polycarbonate material. This is the highest degree of protection that you can get. In addition, you can wear your goggles over your regular eyeglasses or contact lenses.

  • Some goggles or helmets have special filters. They protect your eyes when you work with lasers or engage in welding.

  • Full-face shields are ideal if you are exposed to blood-borne pathogens, chemicals, or heat. Helmets can protect your eyes from molten materials. You can use these protective materials with your goggles or safety glasses. Doing so can give your eyes enough protection, even if you remove your face shield or helmet.

Always maintain your eye protection devices. Dirty or scratched devices may contribute to accidents and reduce vision. Keep backup devices in your desk or locker. That way, you can protect your eyes all the time.
